Document Summary

Homologous structures provide evidence of common ancestry. Appear to have similar structural skeletal elements, but different functions. Remnants of structure, which may be underdeveloped or seemingly useless. Previously they may have had important functions but presently they do not. Can be explained by the theory of evolution as a remnant from common ancestors. Have similar functions but found in animals that are not closely related. Some examples: wings of insects and wings of birds are both for a similar function flight, however, insect wings and bird wings are made of very different materials and are present in more distantly related species. Developmental homologies (homologies in respect to overall structures and functions) Modern day organisms reflect common origins of developmental processes of related organisms. If genes are changing and related, then the underlying genetic plan must be related. Embryos of chicks, humans and cats resemble one another (pharynhgeal [gill] slits & tails) Molecular biology suggests that important proteins are highly conserved.
