There are two types of er, the rough and smooth er. The rough er gets its name due to the fact that ribosomes dot its surface, whereas the smooth er is clear of ribosomes. The rough er is the site of co-translational transport, protein modification and the formation of vesicles that will transport proteins for the er to the golgi apparatus. The smooth er is the site of fatty acid and phospholipid synthesis, is where carbohydrate metabolism occurs and where calcium is sequestered to regulate calcium concentration in the cytosol. Modification to proteins embedded in the er membrane will only occur on the luminal portion of the protein and not on the transmembrane domain or on the cytosolic portion of the protein. Protein glycosylation - the addition of a polysaccharide of sugar group to a protein. It is common on proteins that are secreted from the cell and proteins embedded in the cell membrane.
