BIOLOGY 3UU3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, Proopiomelanocortin, Neuropeptide Y
Document Summary
Some animals have adaptation for getting rid of food that may be bad of them. Animals in colony, maintain sleep body proportions, etc. but can induce these animals to be obese just like people. Horses and rats do not vomit frequently, dogs can readily vomit, they have a mechanism for getting rid of poisonous foods. Npy: studied in aging research, regulate carb intake, highly active in inducing feeding. Amino acid deficiency or imbalance: also regulate inc feeding. Acth: when broken down, some pieces are opiods. The arcuate nucleus: has 2 sections within it: argp/npy and pomc/cart are first order neurons, two interacting spheres, and receptors involved. These two then feed into second order and downstream neurons. Ghrelin from stomach released when it is empty. Stimulate it, will induce feeding, lesion = no feeding. Csf carries various signals through the spine, ventricles then feed into the hypothalamus, lot of hypothalamic functions then wired up to the ventricles.
