Document Summary

Before 1962, were considered inert and thought to not undergo any chemical reaction. Neil bartlett: some noble gases react, many noble gas compounds have been synthesized from the heavier elements (xe, kr) Typically gain electrons to try and become like noble gases gain stability. Only require 1 electron for noble gas configuration. Chlorine gas + iodine ions, chlorine steal electrons. I br cl = s l g: cl2 (g) + 2 i- (aq) -> i2 (aq) + 2 cl- (aq) Bromine + chloride ions, no reaction (bromine, below chlorine in periodic table: br2 (l) + cl- (aq) -> no rxn. When you react them with alkali metals, vigorous reactions occur. Sulfur -> burn in oxygen with a catalyst -> so3 -> pass gas through water - > sulfuric acid. Lose electrons to get to a noble gas configuration. Easily oxidize in water, metals lose electrons oxygen ions gain. Result = hydrogen gas and release of metal ions in the water.
