Chemistry Lecture 34
Naming & Reactions
Each name consists of 3 parts: 1) prefix: indicates position, number and type of
branches and the type of each functional group; 2) parent: indicates the length of
the longest carbon chain where you use parent names such as meth (1 C), ETH (2
C), prop (3 C), but (4 C), etc; lastly there is 3) suffix: indicates the type of
hydrocarbon, for example ANE, ENE, YNE, includes certain functional groups
Aromatic Compounds
Aromatic compounds contain one or more 6 carbon unsaturated rings, for example
benzene rings
ALKANES
ALKENES & ALKYNES
-find the longest, continuous carbon chain
-number the chain from the end closest to a
branch
-if the first branches are equal distances use next
one
-name branches as alkyl groups —> branch name
related to the number of carbons and ends in -YL
-also locate each branch by preceding its name
with the carbon number on the chain
-remember to list branches alphabetically
-do not count “n-,” “sec-,” or “t-“ but count iso
-use prefixes if more than one of the same group
present
-prefixes includes DI, TRI, TETRA, PENTA, etc
-do not count in alphabetizing
-change suffix on main name from -ANE to -ENE
for alkenes and -YNE for alkynes
-number from end closest to the double or triple
bond
-the number in front of the main name indicates
the first carbon of the double bond
Combustion: !
2CH3CH2CH2CH3 + 13O2 = 8CO2 + 10H2O
Substitution:
2CH3CH2CH2CH3 + Cl2 = CH3CH2CHClCH3 + HCl
Dehydrogenation:
2CH3CH2CH2CH3 = CH3CH=CHCH3 + H2
Combustion:
H2C=CH2 + 3O2 = 2CO2 + 2H2O
Addition Reactions (hydrogenated):
H2C=CH2 + H2 = H3C-CH3
Addition Reactions (hydration):
H2C=CH2 + H2O = H3C-C(OH)H2
Addition Reactions (hydro-halogenation):
H2C=CH2 + HCl = H3C-C(Cl)H2
