Almost all chemical reactions need some form of separation to obtain a pure product. There are 100,000 compounds in a human cell. To create a profile, you must separate all of the compounds. Most of separation science developed in chem, but now it is a part of biochem (separating proteins, etc. ) and all other science. Pharm: 1/5 pills manufactured is broken open and analyzed to ensure that the batch is consistent with right dose, quantity, etc. to ensure safety. Chemical reactions: 1/2 of all useful human pharmaceuticals are made from organic synthesis. The other half come from natural sources (ie: penicillin from penicillium). The natural sources must be separated to isolate the desired compound.
