Operates on principle of stratigraphy = lower strata are more ancient than upper strata. Stratigraphy is used to determine relative date or relative chronography. Point of reference is another artifact or event. A date on a fixed chronological scale (for example ad, bc) Absolute date is fixed on a known scale: Anno domini= in the year of the lord (absolute date) e. g. , ad 35, or ad.
