Context: the association of artifacts & features found within a particular area or layer, & the relative position & relationship of this area or layer to the ones above it & below it, the context of archaeological finds is what allows us to interpret them & to understand their function & meaning, all material culture is of interest, from the cheap to the expensive, because it tells us something about human activity & human value systems, goal of archaeology: to reconstruct the past of different cultures. Purpose of a site grid: to provide a basic reference & orientation for the site & topographic features, e. g. , rivers, roads, trees, locate objects and features found in relation to one another, produce and accurate site plan at the end, grid squares can be small or big, spaces in the middle are called bulks and are taken down eventually at the end.
