Monumental tombs :various forms, built by wealthy individuals, roman emperors. *burial occurred outside of the city walls (with few exceptions) Niches in a larger structure created to house cremated remains. People could come and pay tribute to the family members that were there. Keeping the family members together in the afterlife was important. Tomb for commander of the roman army under marcus aralias. Shows a fight and has figures leaping out and chaos rules. In the underworld there was a place for the good there as well. Mad of two materials travertine exterior and concrete interior (former slave) He made enough money and bought himself out of slavery freedman. Having a monumental tomb put augustus above the other citizens of rome and therefore rightful king. Began to build in 28 bc but he didn"t die for a few decades.
