Lived and worked in alexandria, egypt- cultural center of greek world in. Hellenistic period (323 bce- 30 ce) *no longer athens- alexandria is very far from athens. Alexandria was famous for being very well designed as a city (urban planning) He and his father philip expanded the world. Liked greek literature/culture- much of it was preserved bc of him. Hellenistic period starts w his death (323 bce) Greek scholars, philosophers, etc, came to work there. Mousaion (museum) built by ptolemies- place dedicated to the muses. Library was an important part of the mousaion (research, study)- had copies of all (cid:862)(cid:272)lassi(cid:272)(cid:863) te(cid:454)ts, (cid:271)ur(cid:374)ed do(cid:449)(cid:374) a(cid:374)d e(cid:448)er(cid:455)thi(cid:374)g (cid:449)as lost. Classic texts- stories said that the library staff were underhanded about getting copies, tried to get the most authentic works and sent copies back to the people who lent the original. Poets of the time were scholars- engaged in skilled competition, show off knowledge of obscure myth.
