The art of love: timing: avoid her birthday, though counter-intuitive to love poetry, women wear and receive fancy clothes so avoid spending on her. Roman norms, love should not be public: ovid attacks the system, subverting augustus, the mythological element: Connects to the tradition, and sets ovid apart. Deflating traditional myth- takes well known myths and skews them slightly in a less- than-glorious light. Poetry only form of writing for hundreds of years: epic is the standard. All writings and genres have homer in the background. People not writing in epic are deliberately not writing in epic. Any departure from homeric style of epic was new (argonatuica apollonius) Mythology: fundamental to the greek and roman history. Traditional stories used in a progressive way to relate to real issues (family, love, war, religious, etc. ) Always about entertainment, everyone like it, popular culture.
