Today"s notes are the last on the midterm. Ceremonial entranceway - the gate to the acropolis. Marks transition from everyday to the sacred demanding different behaviour from those who visit the acropolis. Exterior columns are similar to those on the parthenon. Known as the entry gates not gate, because it led to complex of temples. South side: facade only access to athena nike temple. Ancient authors discussed this space as having mural paintings. High up individuals in society could have sat in there. Concession was made in the propylaia to not build over a pre-existing sculpture. To the right on the plan (in the red box) the corner is beveled, to accommodate pre-existing wall belonging to mycenaean structure. One of the many signs from the acropolis that this was a space for institutional memory. The athenians valued their history, possibly mythohistory. Acropolis was not just interactions with deity, but look back to the history of the city.
