All plays in 5th century bc in greece were performed in the theatre of dionysus. Dionysus/bacchus: dionysus has grown up and returned to thebes for revenge, as semele was disrespected and mocked by the people of thebes. Bacchae = female worshippers of bacchus/dionysus (maenads/bacchantes) Dionysus: explains in the beginning how he wants to take revenge on thebes. Says how he will disguise as a stranger.
