Senatus populusque romanus = the senate and the people of rome. Made up of men who had previously held magistracies. Eventually could pass laws, but for most of its history, it had no law-making powers. The role of the senate: advised the consuls, controlled the treasury, investigating major crimes, receiving and sending embassies (and foreign relations in general), proposing laws. The progression of offices that a man held (or aspired to hold) Rules governing who could run for which office. There were minimum ages and positions that had to be held in a specific order. Order of offices: military tribune (optional, but not required), quaestor, aedile, tribune of the plebs (optional, but not required), praetor, consul. Candidates advertised their personal achievements or those of their ancestors. Having high office holders in the family was a major boost to one"s chances of winning high office. Men who had never had an office holder in their family before.
