Online world permits more diversity, easier distribution, lower costs. Not quite the end of work: possibly the opposite. Even the successful pay a price: blurring of boundaries, concerns about privacy, surveillance. Examples of technologies used: text messages, video conferencing, internet, e-mail, wireless comms, websites, intranet. Automation means productivity goes up but number of jobs goes down. More work created outside of canada than inside. Technology does not seem to have cut down on travel. Monitoring of customers through loyalty plans, other forms of surveillance. Other issues: privacy, pedophilia, high-risk behaviour, literacy, cyber-bullying, public shaming. Media literacy courses new being brought to teens. Online media are sometimes seen as a way to hold people accountable. Some argue that this has now gone too far. Promotion of vigilante justice, reactions can be extreme, can destroy real lives. Many exmplaes discussed throughout this book are applicable to our daily lives. Questions of social responsibility, of how media and democratic governance, come through in.
