INTRODUTION TO COMMUNICATION
CHAPTER 1: MEDIA AND SOCIETY
Media in an Ever-Changing Communications Universe:
-communication media affect us on individual, societal and global levels
-internet has allowed individuals to become content producers, not just content consumers
-communications technology has the ability to shrink space (telegraph, telephone, radio,
television and internet)
Critical Approach:
-to “look analytically at the ways media are implicated in our knowledge and understanding of
the world” (page 8)
-ask “whose or what interest do media serve and what role do they play in creating and
maintaining relationships, particularly in relations of wealth and power?” (page 8)
-considers how “language, culture, media — the social contexts… frame and determine not
only the meaning… but the kinds of messaging we create” (page 10)
-critical DOES NOT = “complaining” or “trashing”
What is Communication?:
-the act of making a message common to one or more people (page 9)
-the act of transmitting and exchanging information and meaning through any form of
language
-form of social action
-creating, sending, interpreting messages or ideas
-there are different ways of conceptualizing this broad definition — 3 models
TRANSMISSIONS MODELS
HOW A “MESSAGE” IS “TRANSMITTED” (NOT CONCERNED SO MUCH WITH “CONTEXT”)
Harold Lasswell’s Model — Chain of Communication:
Who Says — What — To Whom — In What Channel — With What Effect
-assumes no interaction/feedback
-assumes ‘total conductance’ (no miscommunication)
-no understanding of larger social contexts of communication
Shannon & Weaver — Mathematical Model of Communication:
(page 10; figure 1.2)
Sender — Medium — Receiver (REPEAT — LIKE RECYCLE SIGN)
-sender becomes a receive by interacting/feedback
-receiver becomes sender by interacting/feedback
-accounts for ‘noise’ — interference with intended message
-STILL does not consider the social context of communication (social variables - language,
culture, individual traits - influence the way communication takes place)
