Different from qualitative, where we might come from an inductive methodology. Theory: we generally have a sense of what is happening; maybe we already have a deeper understanding of what is happening, depth interviews, secondary research, the professors come ad make a focus group. Want to understand the phenomena and might have some insight about it. The more time a student spends online, the lower the grades they get. Measuring: the time they spend online through a survey, by asking them how much time do you spend on social media then break it up into different types. The independent variable is the student"s grade. Measuring the student"s grades with time, or through self-reporting. The more runs the blue jays run, the more they will win. The more calories you consume a day, the more weight you gain: in order to test see if there"s a correlation (build a relationship) between the two variables.
