Document Summary
Once a bargaining unit has been established and a union has been certified as the rep. of the employees in the unit, collective bargaining is the way terms of employment contract are made. Most bargaining teams are 3-6 people but are usually higher with centralized teams. Bargaining goals talks within wages, hours and conditions of employment. Both the union and management will determine target and resistance points for each issue they will bargain over. Union and management must negotiate a new agreement when the old(whole) agreement expires: they determine the major issues over which each side has unique concerns. For each issue, union and mgt. must determine the range of acceptable outcomes for their membership. Most unions accumulate a list of future bargaining issues that arise during the term of an existing contract (e. g. , emerging health). Then at the end of the contract, unions have meetings to obtain the views of the memberships.
