Nan - not a number/undefined, no natural value. Digital information - a string of data broken into bits. Exploded on its first test flight in 1996. 64 bit floating point number was converted to a 16 bit machine integer. The module that did the conversion was written for the ariane 4 but reused for the ariane 5 without re- analysis. Includes natural numbers, integers, rational, real, complex, modular. Natural - counting and ordering ( include 0) Modular integers - for integer arithmetic modulo, clock arithmetic, can be done for any number of numbers. Problem : representing an infinite number of members. Solution 1 : represent each member of the system using a fixed number of bits. Advantage - efficiency in use of space and time. Disadvantage - only finite number of members can be represented. Solution 2: represent each member using unbounded number of bits. Machine integers - integers are represented with a fixed number of bits.
