Description
Central Processing Unit Buzz Words • Mhz and GHz – MegaHertz and GigaHertz • Pipelining – instructions are overlapped • RISC – reduced instruction set computing – Motorola, Macs used to have this  chip • CISC – complex instruction set computing  ­ Intel • SMP – symmetric multi­processing – normally on machines with more than one  CPU CPU • The CPU is contained on a chip called a microprocessor • The CPU  REGISTER contains a  REGISTER control unit, an  arithmetic logic  ALU unit (ALU) and  CONTROL UNIT registers Control unit  (similar to  dispatcher) • Directs and coordinates the processing of instructions • Contains instruction set of the CPU
