EARTHSC 3MB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Central Tendency, Weighted Arithmetic Mean, Nth Root
Document Summary
Central tendency -the middle, projecting the middle of a single value of a series of data. Arithmetic mean-average, the sum of numbers divided by the count of numbers (n), uses this value to represent all the data (the best summary of the data in one number), does not take in account compound growth. Geometric mean- less frequently used, the nth root of the product of numbers (x1, x2, x3), used to measure growth, different scales, compound interest, large variations (because a large data will skrew the mean average) Median- the mid-point in an ordered series of data: odd: middle observation, event: average of two middle observations. Mode-the most frequently occurring number or value. The more variation between the mean, median, and mode; the more variation and spread the data is (not evenly distributed) Proportions and probabilities-all related to fractions of numerical values, often confused between each other.
