Many volcanoes have killed a lot of people. Volcanic activity - associated with economic deposits of minerals. Pyroclastic debris: lava and rock fragments ejected in a volcanic eruption. Pyro means hot, clastic means broken - hot lava broken. Related to mantle plumes, narrow columns of hot mantle rock. Hawaii - over plume - rocks have isotopic signature characteristic of core. Affect style of eruption and type of volcano produced. 3 main types - shield, cinder cone, composite. Broad, sloping cones, low viscosity lava flows, non-violent eruptions.
