They will be perfectly flat to make it easier for us. The plans we care about are between the rock units. If we have 3 rock units, you will have 2 contact units. Means the upper and lower plans are perfectly parallel. If you take your hand as a plane. Any plane can be defined by 1 line of elevation and the angle it makes with the horizontal. If perfectly horizontal, any line on that plane is called a strike plane. (perfect elevation) If you tilt it you can only have 2 lines of perfect elevation. The angle something makes with the horizontal is called the dip angle. Because water always reaches a level, you can draw a strike line. The direction of the strike line can be in any direction. Then its 0 or 360 (same direction) and increase at the east (90 degrees) and then south (180 degrees) west is (270 degrees).
