EARTHSC 1G03 Lecture 32: Lecture 32-glaciers 2
Document Summary
The older the ice is, the harder it is to pick out annual layers. You have a law of super position in older ice. You have sediment long the sides and a nice curved end moraine. End moraine locations are useful because it gives us a really idea of how far ice went and when it was at its largest extent and how fast it melted back. Glaciers don"t sort sediment, so you know it came from a glacier, it didn"t travel far either because if it was carried by stream, you would have sorting. Rocks, big and small littering fields are usually glacial erratics. They are boulders carried by ice, when the ice melts, it drops right there. Erratics give you an idea of how it has travelled. In southern ontario, farmers for generations they have been moving erratic for generations. In the big pile, you can find some fun rocks. The arrow is where the ice is going.
