Document Summary

Di erent kinds of goods it"s useful to group goods and services by two characteristics: Excludability: you can prevent someone from using or enjoying the good. Ex. you can"t have a candy bar unless someone gives you one or sells you one. Rivalry: if one person is using or enjoying a good, the ability of someone else to use or enjoy it is diminished. Ex. if i"m eating a candy bar, you can"t eat the same one. Using these two characteristics, we can divide goods into four categories: Free-rider: a person who receives the bene t of a good but avoids paying for it. Instead of buying a ticket to enter the park, i sit on the other side of the fence, look up and enjoy the display for free. A private rm would not likely put on the reworks show - probably not enough people would buy tickets to make it pro table.
