Not a painter of dreams, she insisted, but a painter of her own reality (fuentes 14). The way in which pain trans gures the self and the way in which the pain of the self becomes one of the most important deities for her art. Kahlo shares a kinship with the actual world; that world is a sacred/spiritual world in addition to a material world. Trolley accident which shatters her body & leaves her so vulnerable that the doctors do not know if they can x her. 29+ years of surgery, gangrene (leading to an amputation), 2 miscarriages. Kahlo pieces together a universe which insists on deep kinships between her body, the nation of mexico, and the larger world/environment. !1: a kinship that is replicated both in terms of (painful) divisions in the self and in.
