Pinocchio - Written in 1883 by Carrol Colbie o Pen-name o Took pen-name from his mother’s village - Died in 1890 - Journalist and theatre critic - Pinocchio was “born” in Florence - Story of the Marionette, success - 16 installments - The name Pinocchio came from “Pin” and “occhio” says wood and brat o Nickname for “good fortune” Structure Two different Pinocchios - Chapters 1 – 15 o Pinocchio is hanged, moves towards his death - Chpaters 16-36 o Pinocchio moves towards his “birth” a boy is born  A little boy is born at the end  Some sort of turning point occurs - “Once upon a time...” indicates that the story is a fairytale o Associations with kings, queens, etc. o Instead this story talks about the “little people”  The ordinary people Creation of a Hybrid: Puppet, Human, or Work of Art - Piece of wood that is alive o Humour, satire - Of Geppetto and Cherry o Mr. Cherry is a drunk  Thinks he’s going crazy - Different attitude to the wood - Both are wearing “wigs” o Sign of age o People in this age wore wigs to distinguish themselves o In the lower-class it is not typical o Object they wear that’s not associated with nature o Puppet has no strings attached to him o Creator has no control over his creation
