Fiction adopts facts, gives it culture life – makes it open to perception and thought – it is a mode of representation
What does Fiction do?
“Fracture truth in a meaningful and purposeful way”
Able to manipulate how we come to understand the content – through language and representation
Fiction offers us with pleasure (an escape from reality) and understanding (aid in our return to life)
Plot
The movement of a story, temporal organization of events, how time is organized
Look for
oBeginnings/endings
oStages and turning points
oCharacter changes
oObstacles to movement, productive tension
oMarginal details
oCharacter
Agents of stories, not all stories have characters
No character is a real person – you’re analysing a representation of personhood
Look for
oDefining markers of characters such as – psychology, personality, function & social classification
oScale of individuation to typification – uniqueness or not? Representing a larger category?
oTheme
What does the story speak to or is thinking about?
Look for:
oHow does it push you to think beyond that? Broader implications?
oHow does the story’s unfamiliarity of a particular thing still allow for reader to relate to it
oHow does the story’s familiar parts give readers a way to new concerns/unfamiliar ideas
oPerspective
Subjective orientation of the story
The way the story shapes the reader’s access to the information
Look for:
oTypes of voice – 1st(I, me), 2nd (you, yourself), 3rd (she/he)
oCombinations?
oDesign
Fiction’s arrangement and deployment of various elements
Look for:
oJuxtaposition – different elements put in close proximity to each other, creating a formal relationship,
emphasizing – similarity/differences/both
oRepetition of elements to highlight a particular theme/idea/object
