We are only ever performing gender rather than possessing it. We are given" a gender and identity related to it, which cannot be avoided. It is a unified system that has everything to do with language. There are infinite types of discourse (academic, medical, etc. ) A discourse has certain rules that govern it. The way that you represent the world creates reality. Our sense of ourselves/of what we are/our personality. Parts of individual identity can involve collective identity. This is the main source of questions/debates over identity. In pop culture there are claims both that identity is fixed and that it is infinitely changeable. Eg. women are certain ways and men are certain ways; but there is insistence on the fact that you can remake" yourself.
