Irony: missionary is judging the man for his irrational notions, when she too believes in her own different but equally irrational notions: carr is talking about trampling upon their spiritual beliefs and humanizing them. She is empathizing with them ( down deep we all hug something ) Carr is opposing the missionary (and, more broadly, the power structure) and conventional ways of thinking by pointing out the wrongness of judging the natives.
