She is a part of the store, land, town a list of his possessions. He repeatedly attacks her ability to speak trapping and enclosing dominance. They are learned practices jody is learning to be like a white slave master. Janie manages to break the patriarchal cycle by speaking and writing her own story. Life as a game of joy, give and take rather than asserting authority.
