Patterns of global urbanization: tend to be located in coastal areas, projected growth rates are most significant in developing world. Modern urban areas are problematic because cities are huge consumers of goods and services: consume water, food, and energy while producing lots of waste. Sustainable cities: economically feasible, ecologically sound, socially equitable. Improve sustainability of large cities: define boundaries of growth, limit building permits, planning of land use, eia, zoning and mixed-use of land is encouraged, preserve existing open space. Green architecture: structures built using eco-friendly materials and processes: green building designs: zero energy building designs and landscaping requires less air conditioning/heating, etc.
