Total of all the materials thrown away from homes and commercial establishments. Excludes: hazardous industrial nonhazardous wastes (demolition, construction, and agriculture) Waste put in ground, covered with dirt, left to decompose (contaminates groundwater) Leechate forms as water percolates through the waste piles and collects residues (becoming collected in cells) Methane produced as by-product, landfills equipped with flares to output this gas. Now advance combustion systems integrate various steps, so that only water vapour and carbon dioxide are released. Objective was to decrease the amount of disposable waste produced. Promotes the decomposition of organic wastes to their nutrient building. Promotes the decomposition of organic wastes to their nutrient building blocks. Mostly water, rest is debris, grit, feces and fecal matter, heavy metals and toxic chemicals. Removes large debris, material removed is disposed of at local landfill. Clarifiers which further remove debris and grit (from bottom). Moves through settling tanks, disposed of at disposal facility.
