ENVIRSC 1C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Ecological Footprint, Infant Mortality, Dynamic Equilibrium
Document Summary
There were lots of diseases such as plagues and epidemics. High infant mortality where high birth rates were matched by high death rates. Lead to subsequent major sanitation and hygiene improvements. Introduction of vaccination and immunization against infectious diseases (1970s) 1930"s saw the development of penicillin and the subsequent proliferation of antibiotics. Limits on population growth imposed by infection diseases were removed. Illustrates within a given population how many people belong to different age groups. In developing countries, most of the population is in the younger age groups. Stage 1: high birth rates are matched by high death rates. Stage 2: limits on population growth are moved, birth rates remain high but death rates decline. Stage 3: when economic development leads to a decreased need for families to be large. Birth rates start to decline, while death rates remain families to be large.
