Pores and soil structure: larger pores = more air, cracks, crevices, macropores (conduct water nicely), unstable soil structure (breaks down more easily) Unstable soil structure = turns muddy after rain, Bare unstable soil, after water drop = wet, soil structure falls apart, landflow, less infiltration (smashed soil structure) Forested system: water smashes into the plants rather than directly on the soil. Stable soil structure = runoff, less available water for plants. Winter: not a lot going on in the soil. How it freezes and how deep it freezes depends on the snow.
