Document Summary

Gentech 4ts3 technology and society lecture 1. The first reference to engineering can be linked to the romans/greeks. The latin expression ingenious was used to suggest some ingenious attribute of an object or a person. The romans did not invent the practise of making ingenious devices. Innovative thought and skilled actions were essential to the emergence of communities, cultures, and civilization. For most of the time since 7 million years ago all humans on earth fed themselves exclusively by hunting wild animals and gathering plants. In human societies possessing domestic animals, livestock helped feed more people in four distinct wats: by furnishing meat, milk and fertilizer and by pulling plows. A separate consequence of a settled existence is hat it permits one to store food surpluses. Once food can be stockpiled, a political elite can gain control of food produced by others, assert the right of taxation, and engage full-time in political activities.
