Recall: we introduced cities as a form of settlement, we also defined urban and rural" areas. Every rural place is not urban and vice versa. Urban area: the spatial extent of the built-up area surrounding and including an incorporated municipality, such as a city. Then it starts to fade and become the countryside. You can draw a line around the built up area around the municipalities. Where the built up areas starts to disappear. At what size of the community do we consider for it to be urban or not urban. And then you can see the extent of where its no longer built up. Exceeding some threshold of pop and/or density. The existence/absence of economic activities (i. e. mining, agriculture or finance and manufacturing) If they"re in manufacturing or in the service sector then it"s urban.
