Introduction to cities & urban forms of settlement. Louis wirth: size, density, heterogeneity of urban populations make for greater anonymity and social isolation. Why is studying about cities so important? globally, urban population exceeds rural population for the rst time in 2007-08. 70% in cities, 90% in urban places, 10% in rural settlements. Cities are: centres of large, diverse, and densely concentrated populations, centres of technological change and innovation, centres of concentrations of power and economic activity. City: a legally incorporated self-governing unit; an inhabited place of greater size, population or importance than a town or village. Today: cities are ubiquitous and their existence seems inevitable however, they are a relatively recent creation. Region of rst cities: mesopotamia: area in modern day iraq, valleys and plains between tigris & euphrates rivers. Emergence of cities: approximately 3500 bc: relatively recent.
