Culture: the way of life, of a specific group of people (religion, language, race) Each culture group adapts (cultural adaptations) to their local environment in different ways. Ex: new languages (new dialects/accents), new religions, ways of dressing, new foods, traditions, recreational activities, etc. Among the adaptations is how people live (where and how they live their lives) Settlements, study of where people live and the types of houses, there area. Ex: rural hamlets, towns, cities, mega-cities, etc. (hamilton is different than toronto, which is different than new york, etc. ) Usually defined in relation to one another. Whatever is not urban is rural (vice versa) (not necessarily true) Urban = built up, large population, densely populated (many people in small area) Ex: tokyo (large population, many buildings, etc. ) Rural = not built up, not as populated. What proportion of world lives in rural locations (world = 50%) (ex: africa & asia = 50-60%, vs. oceania, europe, north/south america = 20-30%: urbanization.
