Recall: some key concepts: location: refers to a particular position in space, place: a location with some particular meaning or significance associated with it. Landscape: the visible human imprint on the land: natural/physical environment, human environment. Cultural landscape: the outcome of interactions between people (societies) and their environments: cultural groups create cultural landscapes, a result of cultural adaptation. The needs of a cultural group: all inhabited parts of the earth = cultural landscape. Can be overtly different or mildly different: america vs canada (mildly, canada vs africa (overtly) Many distinct cultures = different cultural landscapes. Meaning & significance transcend the cultural group: symbolic landscapes: symbols of a culture and what is stands for. Statue of liberty symbol of an important element of american identity: greeting for immigrants arriving in the harbour that stands for liberty and freedom, symbolic of american values.
