GEOG 1HA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Topological Map, Walmart
Document Summary
How much space does something on earth take up. Object, physically real with measureable extent and definable boundaries. Key for map-making, description and analysis (explanation) of spatial distributions. M(cid:272)master(cid:859)s (cid:272)a(cid:373)pus fro(cid:373) the (cid:448)ie(cid:449) of a (cid:373)ap. Locations identified by their relative positioning and importance, eg, a topological map. Topological- maps, scale, distance, and positioning are estimates. Location: refers to a particular position in space. Absolute (mathematical) location: latitude and longitude co-ordinates using arbitrary mathematical grid. A short drive from downtown, or adjacent to cootes paradise, etc. A location of significance is given a name. Names of places can provide a degree of locational understanding. Place: a location with a particular identity or meaning or significance (individual or collective) Ex. if the teacher broke his leg on the stairs then we would attach meaning to that specific place.
