GEOG 1HA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Global Positioning System
Document Summary
When people think of maps, they generally think of the printed, roadside maps. However, digital mapping has become explosively popular in recent years. There are advantages and disadvantages to both digital mapping and traditional paper maps. Printed maps portray the world s surface, or a particular part or region of the earth, on a flat surface. In transferring data from a three dimensional shape to a flat piece of paper, projections and errors are undeniably going to happen as some data is ignored. Many people use maps when they are going to a new location, however because they do not know the location they are travelling to, they are also unfamiliar with the map displaying the data. Personally, i have always had a particularly hard time interpreting and visualizing maps. It takes longer for me to discover my location than it would to figure it out without using the map.
