Introduction: Geography literacy Concepts: Space • Areal extent of a region Absolute space: Think about in objective and absolute terms ex. Square feet Relative space: Open to interpretation and is often perceptual, not necessarily to scale and is commonly described through adjectives Concepts: Location Absolute (mathematical) location: Communicated through co-ordinates or distance via mathematical numbers Relative location: Depends on perspective, not scaled ex. “far”, “close”, subway map that points out the location stops but not to scale Nominal (toponym) location: A place name, consists of conflicts that argues between the name of a place, locational understanding ex. “Mcmaster”, “Hamilton” Concepts: Place • Significant meaning to a subset of a population or individuals (not everybody) • Location + cultural meaning = place • Sense of place: Personally significant attachment Local and regional characteristics o
