War= act of conflict by a state => relatively recent. Two sovereign states engage in a war and the idea of this recent. Began to emerge with the emergence of nationalism when we started to see the formation of sovereign states. Thinking about one cultural group disliking another cultural group, the view of the religion. Much of the cold war, threat of the cold war. The geographies of conflict exist at a number of spatial scales. State vs state conflict, e. g. the world wars. Conflicts within the boundaries of a state, e. g. civil wars. World war i and ii; vietnam; middle-east conflicts between. Conflicts where a particular cultural group fights against other people usually within its country for some greater autonomy. Disagreement within two cultural groups that exist in that country. Eg us-led invasions/ wars in afghanistan, iraq, etc. Global wars vs civil wars and secessionist conflicts; approx.
