Introduction to Globalization
Recall:
Projection: mathematical technique for representing a 3-dimensional sphere on a 2-
dimensional map
- 3 main forms of projections- each with their own advantages and limitations
o hundreds of specific variations
all have varying forms of accuracy
main forms of distortion are: direction, distance, are
*when creating sketch maps, drawing every detail is essential
What is Globalization?
- Tennis balls made between 1902- 2002 were made in Barnsley England
- 2002- present, tennis balls are made in Bataan, Philippines
o relates to globalization because the balls were made extremely close to where
they were being used, but now they are made extremely far and brought back to
where they are being used (Wimbledon)
Globalization: increasing interconnectedness of people and societies around the world
- A complex combination of economic, political, and cultural changes that have been
evident but that have accelerated markedly since about 1980, bringing about a
seemingly ever-increasing connectedness of both people and places
- Emerging from this definition are two dimensions of globalization:
o Globalization: processes through which the world is becoming a single world
society- a global village
A village is a place where everyone is connected to one another, where
everyone gets along, where everyone speaks the same language, etc.
o Globalization: production and consumption of goods and services
A global shopping mall and a global assembly line
Example: being able to purchase something in a different country
and receiving it through the mail in 1-2 days (Amazon)
World Trade:
- The emergence of a globalization economy is best illustrated via the rapid growth in
world trade
- This growth has been facilitated by the ability to shift production to other areas of the
world
- Made i Chia is o uiuitous: seeigly eeythig is ade thee
o While not exactly accurate, it is generally true, but this shift has come
comparatively recently (and quickly)
Increase in products being made in China, decrease in products being
manufactured in the U.S, for example
- Global Shipping:
