GEOG 1HB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Megacity, Tokyo City, Urban Area
URBAN GROWTH & URBANIZATION – LECTURE B
Urban growth: an increase in the absolute size of an urban area/city.
• Number of people
• Area of land
Urbanization: an increase in the proportion of the population living in urban areas.
• A fundamental reorganization of society.
• The transformation of people from rural to urban status i.e. the process of city formation &
expansion.
De-urbanization: becoming less urbanized
To understand Uran Growth & Uranization etter let’s onsider this senario:
The total population of Town A in year 1 is 10 people. 5 people live in an urban area while the other 5
live in a rural area. Urbanization at year 1 is 50%;
At year 1, urbanization is
= 50%
A year later, 10 more people migrate to Town A, the total population is now 20 people. 5 of the new
people move into the urban area and the other 5 new people move into the rural area.
Although there is urban growth (more people living in the urban area) there is no urbanization because
the percentage of the total population living in the urban area remains the same.
A year later, urbanization is
50%
But if instead of 5 people, 6 of the new people moved into the urban area and 4 the rural area, we
notice both urban growth and urbanization.
Urbanization is
higher than the 50% at time 1.
Proportion of the population living in urban areas:
• c. 1800 (prior to Industrial Revolution):
3% of the world was urbanized while 10% of that 3% were in MDW.
• 1900
14% of the World was urbanized with 50% of that 14% in MDW
• Today (2015)
54% of urban areas in the world: ~ 80% in MDW and ~48% in LDW.
