Week 3: geographic tools, maps and spatial understanding. Two cities with the highest level of interaction: new york and philadelphia. Primary influences on the level of interaction seen: how big the cities are, how close together the cities are. What effect does changing the distance decay function have: level of interaction changes. Is it reasonable to assume the distance decay function is the same for all places: no it is not reasonable, because of accessibility and connectivity, e. g. of soul an piano young in korea. Maps are two dimensional graphical representations of the world, and depict spatial relationships. Maps communicate information: like where cities are in the world, political boundaries, property boundaries. Maps help us to analyze spatial information. How do you portray a 3-dimensional sphere in only 2-dimensional: one way is to think of the globe as a clementine, take the surface of the earth and remove it in one piece and lay it flat.
