Greek renaissance of the c8th: growth, development, 2nd period state-formation. Greece and greekness: not one state but many rival states . The greeks: mainland greece, aegean islands, ionia. Myth and religion central to state-formation/ identity-information. Panhellenic poetry: second half c8th- homer"s iliad and odyssey. C. 700: explosion temple- building and votives at same as impoverishment of grace goods. Public temples, town squares, common cemeteries: not centralization and stratification but the polis (pl. poleis) Archaic age (c. 750-480): rise of the polis. A society of citizen- farmers: independent smallholders coming together in a participatory self-gov"t. The citizens themselves the state: citizen assemblies and magistrates; no bureaucracy, no police force, no judiciary. C. 750-675: panoly: hoplon shield, corinthian helmet, corselet, greaves, spear, sword.
