So far - focused mostly on intellectual strands of renaissance culture. Artistic tradition represents dramatic break from the traditional medieval art form. Figures are not realistic, there is no effort to make them realistic. 2d focused upon biblical themes, figures are over-large, looming in front of the background, which is secondary to the religious scene being presented. How do we understand this dramatic shift in form and subject matter after 1400. Ex. here is a classical, mythological scene, realistic figures, landscape as important as figures. Argued that artistic form became the most visible expression of the new culture in italy by 1400 (humanism) Image reflects revived interest in classical form and subject matter that underpinned the development of humanism, and also encouraged a profound change in arenas of art and architecture. The meanings these classical works embodied reflected the values of italians living in the 14th and 15th c.
