A number of third parties that arose during this time (in response to the great depression), the most important one was the cooperative commonwealth federation. With the great depression, the canadian government really lost credibility. Many leaders in the western world though the great depression was a momentary dip in economy, that it would recover. Elections were a rejection of one candidate over an acceptance or approval or firm endorsement of a candidate. Many minor measures (e. g. relief camps) put into place led to disgruntlement. The march to ottawa (on-to-ottawa treck) at regina, july 1, 1935 ended with violent riot in regina (mounties stopping protestors really discredited the government at the time) Capitalism was in ruins, parliamentary system was not responsive. A time when a lot of right and left wing movements were on the rise. Moderate socialist response coming from middle class intellectuals, organized labour and farmers (behind ccf) not fascist.
